A new study presented at the Annual Conference of rheumatic
oWashington, DCda shown that overweight, obesity in women is related to
patients with rheumatoid arthritis .
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease that causes pain and hard,
swelling, limited motion and loss of function of multiple joints. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs in the position of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs in 1.3 million Americans, and the disease occurs in women twice as much as men.
Several case-control studies have shown a link between overweight, obesity and the risk of rheumatoid arthritis .
So researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School
and Harvard School of Public Health has decided to investigate further
to confirm and better understand the relationship between overweight,
obesity and rheumatoid arthritis.
He and his colleagues sought to learn more about the link between
excess weight in women and rheumatoid arthritis through research.
Researchers have examined the relationship between overweight and pre-existing condition of obesity and the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis in women in the future. This is a cohort study based on data provided by hospitals, health centers provided by nurses. In the first study, 121 700 women in the age group 30 to 55. In the second study, 116 608 women ages 25 to 42.
All participants answered a questionnaire to determine the lifestyle
and environmental exposures as well as body mass index (BMI commonly
called). A person with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight. A person with a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. Rheumatoid arthritis has been determined based on the screening questionnaire connective tissue and review of medical records.
The analysis was adjusted for factors such as smoking, age and alcohol
use, breast feeding, use of oral contraceptives, menopausal status and
postmenopausal hormone use, ...
Results showed that women who were overweight or obese compared with
women with normal weight have a higher rate of disease development of
overweight in the future.
Hazard ratio is a statistical term to describe an incident rate ratio
at which the participants in the study group is developing RA.
Women who are overweight with a BMI of 25 to 29.9, with an incidence of
rheumatoid arthritis in the first group was 1.19 and 1.78 in the second
group.
Women who were overweight, with a BMI higher than 30, the prevalence of
rheumatoid arthritis in the future are 1.18 and 1.73 in the two
cohorts, respectively.
Thus, this study confirms the contribution of body weight affects
rheumatoid arthritis in women and overweight and obesity in women is
considered a cause of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis
